ASHEBORO – A season-opening home game with Forest City, a July 4th home contest with Holly Springs and the first ever meeting with the Tri-City Chili Peppers highlight the Asheboro Copperheads’ 2020 Coastal Plain League schedule, which the league announced Monday.
The Copperheads, who are beginning their 22nd season in the CPL, open the year Thursday, May 28, at McCrary Park against the Owls of Forest City. It is the first of 26 regular-season home games.
Asheboro then heads on the road for the first weekend of the new campaign with games at Gastonia on Friday, May 29 and at Florence on Saturday, May 30.
“It’s always an exciting time of year when our schedule is released as we are looking forward to an awesome Copperheads season in 2020,” said Keith Ritsche, General Manager and head coach. “Once again we will play a majority of divisional games, which allows for lighter travel and let’s just say we get to know some of our more local opponents well.”
Other regular-season games include a June 29 date at home with the Savannah Bananas, a July 4 meeting at home with Holly Springs, which includes a fantastic fireworks show after the game, and a home game July 8 with the Chili Peppers, the newest CPL team out of Virginia.
The Copperheads will meet Randolph County Post 45 Wednesday, May 27, at McCrary Park before embarking on the CPL season.
The CPL will feature two divisions this season, an eight-team West Division which includes Asheboro, Forest City, Gastonia, High Point-Thomasville, Lexington County, Macon, Martinsville and Savannah.
The seven-team East Division includes Florence, Holly Springs, Morehead City, Peninsula, Tri-City, Wilmington and Wilson.
The Copperheads will have five home Friday night games and four home Saturday night contests.
“We are looking forward to structuring some new and exciting promotional nights that we know our fans will love,” Ritsche said. “Last year featured our first jersey auction for charity since the Copperheads were established and raised a lot of money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. We are working on a similar night this season to help give back to a great cause. On the team side of things, we hope to give our fans many great nights to cheer the Copperheads to victory.”
