A trio of Pirates is headed to Asheboro and they are hoping to bring Coastal Plain League gold with them.
The Asheboro Copperheads have signed East Carolina University pitchers Carter Spivey and A.J. Wilson and catcher Justin Wilcoxen for the 2020 CPL season. Spivey is a sophomore who saw action on the mound as a freshman while Wilson and Wilcoxen are beginning their collegiate careers. Spivey appeared seven times out of the bullpen for the Pirates in 2019, posting a 1-0 record in six innings of action. In his last two appearances, he hurled one shutout inning against Wichita State before hurling 2/3 of a scoreless inning against Louisville.
Wilson was a two-sport athlete at East Surry High School, earning three letters in baseball and one in basketball. He was a four-time all- Northeast Conference selection and two-time conference player of the year. He is a three-time 1-A all-state selection and finished with 11 wins and a 1.20 ERA as a senior. He allowed just 16 hits while striking out 107 in 52 innings pitched. Wilson was listed as the 37th- best North Carolina MLB Draft prospect prior to the 2019 Draft and earned numerous honors by Perfect Game, including being named the 12th-best left-hander and the 128th-best overall prospect.
While at Millbrook High School in Raleigh, Wilcoxen showed marked improvement at the plate in each of his three seasons. As a sophomore, he batted .235 (12-for-51) with a double in 17 games. He knocked in 15 runs while scoring eight. He followed that with a stellar junior campaign, where he earned All-Cap-7 Conference honorable mention accolades after hitting at a .364 clip (28-for-97) with a home run, 22 RBI and six runs scored. He then closed out his prep career byearning all-conference honors and being named Millbrook’s Team MVP after hitting .375 with 32 hits, four home runs, four doubles and 14 RBIs. He was rated as the seventh-best catching prospect in North Carolina (No. 69 overall) by Perfect Game and was listed as a Top 500 overall prospect (No. 208 catching) by Perfect Game.
The Asheboro Copperheads, under the direction of sixth-year head coach Keith Ritsche, begin the season on Thursday, May 28 at home against Forest City, Game time is 7:05 p.m.
The night before, the Copperheads will meet Randolph County Post 45 in the annual exhibition game at McCrary Park.
